Who Benefits from BJJ?
A common misconception is that only aggressive, young males study
BJJ. In truth, the Maguilla Self-Defense Training Course offers
men, women and children of virtually any age and from all walks
of life the ability to DEFEND themselves. You'll find Roberto
Maguilla to be a very personable instructor who caters to all
skill levels and needs:
By the very nature of their profession, everyone in law
enforcement - from security guards and plain clothes store
detectives to the cop on the beat and, yes, even the "G-man" -
faces an ever-present yet unpredictable need to be able to disarm
and subdue individuals effectively (and, whenever possible,
without injury). It's not easy! Moreover, it's not just the
drug-crazed or Most Wanted that require subduing. A disorderly
drunk, an angry spouse or even a juvenile can be a major handful
for a single officer. As a professional, you've been trained to
bring situations under control. Unfortunately, pepper spray isn't
entirely reliable, and the popular technique called "swarming"
often backfires, resulting in injury to the perpetrator and to
officers involved.
The Roberto Marques Self-Defense Course adds a powerful, new
technique to your arsenal. What you learn will give you greater
control over otherwise uncontrollable individuals in close
quarters. When mastered, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu offers several
convincing benefits:
It's a proven method for assessing and managing danger (the
ability to immediately subdue allows you to devote your full
attention to your surroundings and other potential threats)
Hand-to-hand grappling techniques are astonishingly effective at
controlling disorderly or violent persons of any age, sex, or
weight combination.
Competence in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a proven way to disarm
assailants who may be better armed, or when you become disarmed.
(It does happen!)
The additional self-confidence gained through study and practice
virtually guarantees self-control in life-threatening situations.
Many violent offenders who walk the streets now know some form of
potent hand-to-hand combat technique. You have a better chance of
running into these individuals that into someone armed with a
high-powered rifle! You need to know how to respond to this
invisible threat.
Footnote: Roberto approached the supervisor of a federal law
enforcement agency in 1998, with an offer to teach his department
his BJJ self-defense techniques as a supplement to their existing
training. He was rebuffed with a response that demonstrates just
how misinformed many people are about Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
The agent replied, "We can't utilize combat methods that harm
people except in special circumstances."
He refused to listen to Roberto's explanation that employing BJJ
is a perfect way NOT to hurt people, that it is not karate. That
grappling and effective joint locking are far superior methods of
controlling the uncontrollable, of gaining the upper hand almost
instantaneously. Roberto has taught his technique to military,
state, police officers in Rio de Janeiro Brazil and to law
enforcement personnel in the United States. All agree to its
effectiveness. Law Enforcement letters

Be enlightened. Maintain control!
Despite fluctuating year-to-year numbers, it's quite likely that
the violence plaguing our society will worsen before it gets
better. At one time or another, anyone can be vulnerable to
violent crime. Most often, predators seek out the weakest.
Unfortunately, women are prime targets of sexual assault, robbery
and spousal abuse.
The Roberto Marques Self-Defense Course teaches effective skills
for extricating oneself from a dangerous encounter. Roberto
firmly believes women should not "fight" with an attacker... only
escape safely. The key to achieving this end is to learn specific
techniques, including panic control and avoidance/awareness. Your
personal safety and survival, and even that of your youngsters
could come down to a question of preparedness.
The Marques' system teaches you real techniques for the real
world. It demands only that you make a serious commitment to
learn a proven method of self-defense. The techniques do not
require special strength, speed or coordination because they
focus on intelligent use of self-control, balance and awareness.
No amount of speed or strength can save those who panic and
forget what to do.
These techniques are easy to learn and use. However, this should
not suggest that Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is anything but serious
business, meant to be practically employed defending yourself in
danger situations. Regular practice of selected grappling
techniques imbues confidence; practicing the awareness control
techniques helps them become "second nature".
The Marques system has proven highly successful in Brazil and in
United States. Roberto Marques enjoys sharing the many success
stories his female students have told after using these
techniques in real life. He can only do that if you take
advantage of his free visit offer. Why not visit? Roberto's
students come together to learn, grow in confidence and
awareness, and have some fun.
Children are our most important resource and our greatest
responsibility, and Roberto believes strongly that children
benefit from BJJ training. You can't always be there to protect
them: not from the neighborhood bully, not on their way to or
from school (or in school), not at camp, not from any of the
potentially dangerous situations into which kids inevitably
wander.
Using healthy challenges, BJJ instills in young minds and bodies
positive characteristics you want them to have. BJJ is an
investment in their future on so many levels. Skills learned will
empower and protect them the rest of their lives. The confidence
imparted allows their individual personalities to shine. BJJ
teaches discipline and the benefit of hard work without the risks
to developing bones and joints other forms of self-defense pose.
They learn how to think fast on their feet, to improvise and
avoid trouble whenever possible. Early exposure to BJJ is a great
gift. Children as young as 4 and 5 years old are welcome. Call
Roberto for details.
You read the news. You see the TV reports. You know crime and
violence crosses all income and age spectrums. You've reached a
point in your life when Volvo targets you with ads stressing
"safety"; exercise gyms emphasize "flexibility" and alarm
companies stress "security".
And, you are listening.
However, a Volvo is only so safe when you're strapped inside.
Treadmills and stationary bikes are boring. Alarms can fail.
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is real. It can protect you in dangerous
situations, it far surpasses other exercise routines for
increasing flexibility, and participation at Maguilla's academy
is never boring! When the alarm bells go off, whether they're on
a wall or in your head, you'll know how to react calmly and
instinctively. Take advantage of his free visit offer.
Keep your youth! Keep your health! Keep your nerve! Keep control!
"There's never a cop around when you need one." This oft-used
expression pretty much sums up the reason EVERY business owner
and employee needs to be proficient in self-defense. Do you fit
the profile of a potential victim?
- Travel overseas or in unfamiliar parts of your own
country?
- Park in a multi-level garage or walk to and from a
subway?
- Visit vacant homes selling real estate?
- Carry cash or valuable merchandise to and from banks and
clients?
- Work alone in a high-rise office, service mart or gas
station?
You can only count on yourself in an emergency. Brazilian
Jiu-jitsu is the most effective way of legally protecting
yourself. Find out what it can do for you and your employees.
Maguilla offers self-defense courses for individuals and groups,
at his training academy or, when possible, at your place of
business. Contact Maguilla for details.
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is the martial art of the future. A
unique and highly combative art form, BJJ uses leverage to
disadvantage opponents. Independent of size and strength, both
male and female students can be extremely effective defending
themselves.
Popularized in "reality fighting tournaments", BJJ consistently
proves itself against other fighting arts. Although known for
lethal grappling skills, BJJ maximizes the leverage principle by
employing two other combat techniques...kicking and punching. You
will learn how to position yourself to effectively choke and
joint-lock opponents into submission. Unlike other martial arts,
BJJ is active... participation is expected.
By pursuing a typically rigorous practice schedule, BJJ students
enjoy a wide variety of tangential benefits:
- Self-control
- Self-confidence
- Weight loss
- Increased flexibility
- Increased lean body mass
- Cardiovascular conditioning
- Positive attitude
- Agility and motor coordination
- Stress reduction
- Fighting and self-defense skills
Depending on one's goals, effective BJJ can be learned in as few
as 2 practice sessions per week. As in any sport, the more one
practices, the faster one becomes proficient. The key, however,
isn't so much quantity as it is quality. Practicing bad technique
will not achieve good results.
The three primary attractions to studying Maguilla-style
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu are:
- Maguilla's focus is technique...students learn details so
often overlooked at larger Jiu-jitsu academies.
- Whether in a group or one-on-one, Maguilla teaches each class
himself. This personalized approach guarantees both consistency
and safety.
- Maguilla has an open, honest philosophy of not limiting
students. He encourages them to expand their horizons by
exploring other forms of fighting. Maguilla himself practices
Boxing, Greco-Roman Wrestling, and Thai Boxing.
